The Sea Turtle is a generally slow swimming reptile with an average lifespan around that of a human being. Despite their natural longevity, intervention has lead to them being endangered. EnviroKidz is proud to partner with SeeTurtles in their promoting awareness of diminishing sea turtle populations. Read on to learn more about these beautiful animals and what SeeTurtles is doing to ensure they have a plentiful and sustainable future.

Did you know?

• Leatherback sea turtles can travel more than 10,000 miles every year.
• Temperatures of the sand where sea turtles nest determine the sex of hatchlings: cooler temperatures lead to mostly male turtles; and warmer temperatures, mostly female.
• Sea turtles sometimes look like they’re crying – they’re actually excreting the salt water from their bodies through their eyes.
• When it's time to lay their eggs, female sea turtles return to the same nesting grounds where they were born. Only one in a thousand baby hatchlings makes it to adulthood.
• The oldest known sea turtle fossils date back about 150 million years, making them some of the oldest creatures on Earth – dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago.

SeeTurtles

The SeeTurtles organization helps protect endangered sea turtles both by raising awareness and by ensuring the safety of each valuable egg. SeeTurtles sees itself as a facilitator in classrooms worldwide and on local beaches, where it offers resources, both financial and educational, to further the turtle cause. Through their latest initiative, Billion Baby Turtles, SeeTurtles supports local groups in their on-the-ground efforts to protect turtle eggs. These small organizations walk up and down beaches protecting eggs and hatchlings from poaching and predators. Often volunteer run, these groups are great at what they do, but short on resources – that’s where SeeTurtles comes in. For every dollar they raise, SeeTurtles is able to save a baby turtle. So far, the program has helped save more than 120,000 hatchlings.

Our Support

EnviroKidz funding has supported the conservation and education efforts of SeeTurtles through our Giving Back grant program. Our support has enabled SeeTurtles to empower local communities, helping to fund the local volunteer organizations that protect sea turtles on the ground in places like Nicaragua and Costa Rica. We’ve also contributed to teacher workshops to improve conservation education and help youth become stewards of the environment. And perhaps our favourite show of support: we’ve helped protect about 60,000 hatchlings.

How can you save the sea turtles?

• Donate to the Billion Baby Turtles campaign – each dollar donated saves a baby turtle!
• Reduce your use of plastics (sea turtles confuse it for their favorite snack, jellyfish), and organize a beach cleanup in your neighborhood.
