The Lemur is a distinct and secluded primate found mostly on the coasts of Madagascar. EnviroKidz is proud to partner with the Lemur Conservation Foundation in their efforts to preserve these unique little critters. Read on to learn more about these unique animals and what the Lemur Conservation Foundation is doing to ensure the Lemur habitats are restored and maintained for the future.

• There are over 100 species of lemurs ranging in size from just one ounce to 26 pounds.
• Lemurs are nocturnal, and their name in Latin means spirits of the night.
• Most Lemurs live their whole lives in trees, and never touch the ground.
• Most Lemurs have tails longer than their bodies, but unlike monkeys they can’t hang from their tails.
• Lemurs live almost exclusively on the island of Madagascar, and they are the most endangered primates on earth.

Lemur Conservation Foundation

A non-profit corporation dedicated to the preservation and conservation of the primates of Madagascar, the Lemur Conservation Foundation works hard to save these cute critters both at their reserve in the United States and with partner organizations on the ground in Madagascar using art, education, research, and breeding programs. The Lemur Conservation Foundation inspires people through art and education, creating emotional connections with nature that in turn promote conservation of endangered animals. 90% of the plants and creatures that call Madagascar home live nowhere else on earth, like the lemur. Despite its biodiversity, habitats are disappearing quickly as the people of Madagascar – among the poorest in the world – turn to their forests for fuel, agriculture, or income. By teaching present and future generations the value of biodiversity, the Lemur Conservation Foundation hopes to save the lemurs and preserve their habitats.

Our Support

With funding from EnviroKidz, the Lemur Conservation Foundation has created a six book series called The Ako project. Full of beautiful illustrations, each book tells the tale of a different species of lemur as they negotiate the joys and perils of life above land. A mainstay in every k-4 classroom in Madagascar, the series has been translated into English and Chinese so that schoolchildren around the world can appreciate the wacky and wonderful world of lemurs. EnviroKidz funding has also contributed to the EnviroKidz Centre, a community and education space at the Lemur Conservation Foundation’s sister project, the Tampolo Forest Reserve in Madagascar.

How can you help save the lemurs?

• Share your conservation stories or lemur-related artwork with the Foundation’s website.
• Adopt one of the lemurs living at the Myakka City Lemur Reserve in Florida.
• Get your classroom on board to learn about lemurs with resources provided by the Lemur Conservation Foundation.
• Host a bake sale or another fundraiser to raise money for the Lemur Conservation Foundation.
