From Bean to Bowl: The Story Behind the Chocolate in Love Crunch

From Bean to Bowl: The Story Behind the Chocolate in Love Crunch

At Nature’s Path, we believe the best ingredients don’t just taste good—they do good. And nowhere is that truer than in the chocolate that gives our Love Crunch granola its decadent taste.

For more than 20 years, we’ve partnered with Agostoni, a family-owned Italian chocolatier, to source the organic, Fair Trade cocoa that goes into every chocolatey cluster. It’s a relationship built on shared values, deep trust, and a belief that food should nourish not just people, but communities and the planet too.

That story continues today with the launch of our newest organic granola flavors—Love Crunch Dubai Style Chocolate and Love Crunch Blueberry Crème—each crafted with the same thoughtfully sourced chocolate that has been at the heart of Love Crunch from the very beginning.

Why Fair Trade Matters: Investing in Farmers, Communities and the Future

When you reach for our decadent Love Crunch granolas, you’re probably thinking about taste first—and rightfully so. But behind every bite of Fair Trade chocolate is a much bigger story.

Choosing Fair Trade means choosing to invest more—in human dignity, community wellbeing and sustainable livelihoods

In the rural, biodiverse cocoa-growing regions of the Dominican Republic, where cocoa farming sustains entire communities, farmers receive a portion of the proceeds from what they sell that goes directly back into their villages. These funds are collectively managed by farmer-led cooperatives, who decide how best to invest in their future.

And those investments are deeply tangible.

They show up as repaired schools where children can learn safely, as scholarships that open doors for the next generation, and as training programs that help farmers strengthen both their yields and their livelihoods. They show up in clean water systems, aqueducts, and wells that improve daily life for entire villages. They show up in infrastructure—roads, bridges, and community buildings—that quite literally connect people to opportunity.

In some regions, these improvements have transformed communities that were once difficult to access into places where families can reach healthcare, education, and markets with greater ease. What was once isolated becomes connected—and that connection changes everything.

Fair Trade supports programs that strengthen local economies in very practical ways. In the Dominican Republic, for example, many small-scale cocoa farmers struggle with poverty and limited access to clean drinking water, especially during rainy seasons. Through Fair Trade–supported cooperatives like COOPROAGRO and CONACADO, communities have been able to construct and maintain aqueducts, wells, sewage systems, and drinking water infrastructure that benefit multiple villages. These investments improve health and food security, reduce daily hardships for farming families, and create conditions where farmers can plan for the future, not just survive the present.

For Nature’s Path, being a triple bottom line business means putting people and the planet on equal footing with profit.   It's reflected in how our ingredients are grown: through organic and regenerative organic practices that protect soil health and biodiversity while delivering exceptional quality—and in how we support the people, the farmers, workers and communities who are the beating heart of our food system, along the way.

A Partnership Built on Shared Values: Two Family Companies, One Purpose

That commitment to doing things differently is what first brought Nature’s Path and Agostoni together—and what has kept us working side by side for more than two decades.

Agostoni is part of ICAM, a family-owned Italian chocolate company that has been crafting chocolate for 80 years. Like Nature’s Path, they’ve built their business on the belief that quality and ethics should never be separated.

From the very beginning, both companies recognized the value of getting closer to the source—of building direct relationships with farmers rather than relying on layers of intermediaries. Through Agostoni’s direct sourcing model, they work closely with cocoa cooperatives, ensuring fair pricing, long-term stability, and full traceability from farm to finished chocolate.

It’s a model rooted in respect.

When you’ve spent decades working with the same partners, you’re not just sourcing ingredients—you’re building something together. You understand the land, the people, and the craft in a way that simply isn’t possible from a distance.

That philosophy echoes our commitment at Nature’s Path: to leave the Earth better than we found it. Alongside Agostoni, we’re pushing beyond the anonymity of transactional supply chains to help build a food system that puts people at the center through  transparency and mutual responsibility. By choosing direct relationships over distance, we’re working toward a model where collective benefit, reciprocity and care guide every step from field to table. This kind of transformation doesn’t happen through investment alone – it requires trust, openness, and a willingness to co-create better ways of working alongside farms and partners. It means recognizing that we all have a role to play in caring for the land and the people behind our food. Through Fair Trade and long-standing collaboration, we’re helping re-humanize the journey from farm to table – ensuring that every step supports not just product quality, but the well-being of communities and the future of our food system.

And then there’s the chocolate itself.

Agostoni approaches chocolate-making with the same level of care and intention as their sourcing. Utilizing only the ingredients they source firsthand, maintaining full control over quality at every step. Cocoa beans are gently roasted to enhance their natural aroma, preserving the distinct flavor notes of each origin. Cocoa butter is carefully pressed—rather than aggressively extracted—resulting in a smoother, richer chocolate that elevates every bite.

Every batch is tested. Every step is considered. Nothing is rushed.

The Craft Behind the Chocolate: Italian Heritage Meets Fair Trade Organic Farming

There’s also a long tradition behind it all.

Italian chocolate-making is known for its precision, its craftsmanship, and its ability to balance tradition with innovation. It’s a heritage built over generations—one that values not just the final product, but the process that brings it to life.

Agostoni carries that legacy forward while grounding it in modern sustainability.

The cocoa itself is grown using organic, agroforestry practices—often under the shade of native trees alongside crops like banana, citrus, and avocado. This approach nurtures biodiversity, improves soil health, and builds more resilient farms-- giving families not only  additional  income, but also greater access to nourishing foods that support long-term food security and sovereignty   It’s a system that works with nature, not against it.

From there, the organic beans are transformed with care and expertise into chocolate that’s both indulgent and intentional.
