How to Make a Kid-Friendly Green Smoothie
By Katie Serbinski
I’ve found myself thinking time and time again, when is that magic moment when I, as an adult, started enjoying salads. Truth is I’ve never been a picky eater, so I could have well enjoyed eating leafy greens at a young age. While I’ve had the same hope for my boys they just aren’t the biggest fans of Mom’s plea for, “salad for dinner.” Does that mean I’ve stopped trying to serve a side salad here and there? Nope! I’ve just found new ways to get my kids to eat their greens and like them too: in healthy green smoothie recipes!
Green smoothies are packed with all kinds of good-for-you stuff, such as fiber, calcium, and Vitamin C. While there are many ways to make a healthy smoothie recipes for kids, I’ve found that smoothie time in my house always involves some type of dark leafy green (kale, spinach, Swiss chard, bok choy, etc.) and this fancy formula - no what matter what color they turn after blending.
Step 1: Pick a liquid, like almond milk, soy milk, coconut water, or 100 per cent fruit juice
Step 2: Go for extra green, such as kale, bok choy, spinach, Swiss chard
Step 3: Sweeten it up, with 1-2 different fruits, fresh or frozen
Step 4: Make it creamy, with a banana or half an avocado
Step 5: Power with protein and extra healthy fats, like chia seeds, flax seeds, and nut butter
If your kids are in the phase of turning their nose up at the taste of all things green (it’s ok, some adults do too!), try these healthy green (plus a few more) smoothies for kids a try.
